BONTE Pierre, Identités et changement socioculturel dans l’Ouest saharien (Mauritanie, Sahara Occidental, Maroc), Paris, Karthala, 2017

This book deals with the evolution of the West Saharan region within the boundaries imposed on local populations by the Spanish and French colonizers, a development marked by a process of late decolonization and still unfinished according to international organizations. The author wonders about the social and political identities that the populations, formerly pastoral and nomadic, who are currently registered within the framework of this territory, claim.

The anthropological approach leads Pierre Bonte to advance, on specific points, comparative analyzes of the evolution of these populations distributed between Western Sahara, Morocco, Mauritania and the camps managed by the Polisario Front, but falling under the same social and cultural order. It restores these identity phenomena in the contemporary historical movement, without neglecting older events that accompanied the formation of the Baydhan Hassan-speaking society in its northern parts and played a major role in the settlement history of this region.

Director of Research Emeritus at the CNRS, member of the College de France Laboratory of Social Anthropology, Pierre Bonte (1942-2013) conducted for half a century of research on the Tuaregs
of Niger then on the Mauritanian Baydhan society. He is the author of many publications on
the ancient and modern Saharan society (La montagne de fer, Karthala, 2001 ; L’émirat de l’Adrar
mauritanien, Karthala, 2008 ; La Saqiya al Hamrâ, La Croisée des chemins, 2012 ; Récits d’origine. Contribution à la connaissance du passé ouest-saharien, Karthala, 2016) on nomadism, the tribe, kinship, sacrifice, oral literature in the Arab World… He also co-edited the Dictionnaire de l’ethnologie et de l’anthropologie (PUF, 1re éd. 1991), translated in different languages.
